Thanks to T.S. and C.H., Bucky had the chance to sample a 12 fl. oz. bottle of Founder's Breakfast Stout from Grand Rapids, MI. 8.3% alcohol by volume, bottled on September 10, 2015. The label states that this beer is “brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates, and two types of coffee.” Love the baby on the label…though I understand that the State of Michigan thought police recently banned it!
Pouring produced a big 2” mocha coloured head with considerable staying power, while the beer itself verged on black. The head left some considerable lacing down the far side of the glass as it retreated. The aroma was all dark roast coffee and dark chocolate…promising stuff. Its taste very much followed the nose…dark roast coffee and sweet cocoa with very little bitterness. The mouthfeel was very smooth and I would describe the beer as medium/full bodied with a soft carbonation. Normally I prefer the coffee and chocolate flavours in my stouts to come from use of the dark malts rather than having coffee and chocolate actually added to them, but that being said, this is still a tasty beer. Would certainly try this one again if the opportunity should present itself. A few extra points in the rating for the Founder's baby label!
